Refuges
Olympus Refuges
Olympus has fourteen shelters in total: eight organised refuges with summer services and six emergency shelters for prepared mountain users.
The 12 Refuge Challenge follows twelve of these shelters. The organised refuges give hikers beds, food, water access, warmth, and staff contact in season. The emergency shelters sit in harder, quieter parts of Olympus and ask for food, water, cooking gear, tested equipment, and a self-sufficient plan.
Organised Refuges
Organised refuges can offer kitchen or restaurant service, supplies, water access, warmth, and a bed. During busy periods, especially weekends and September-October, book well ahead and confirm current access, weather, and operating rules.
Refuge Etiquette
Use hut slippers, keep shared spaces clean, return dishes, avoid smoking indoors, conserve water, and tell the guardian your route in bad weather.
Emergency Shelters
Emergency shelters are in the harder-to-reach parts of Olympus and have saved hikers from bad weather at altitude. They are not hotels and not guaranteed supply points. Carry food, at least two litres of water per day for drinking and cooking, cookware where needed, and enough judgement to leave the next person safer.
Carry Your Own Supplies
Food, water, cooking gear, sleeping kit, power, and weather layers are your responsibility.
Radio Check
On arrival, test the emergency radio where present, close it properly before leaving, and use 146.500 MHz or 112 in a real emergency.
