Twelve practical rules for walking Olympus well: shared dorms, limited water, no showers, pack weight, weather, food, and Leave No Trace.
The challenge is easier to enjoy when expectations are honest. Refuges are shared spaces, water can be limited, emergency shelters have no guaranteed supplies, and Olympus weather can turn quickly even in summer.
Hut Etiquette
Expect shared dormitories, no showers, limited privacy, and strict water economy. Keep common areas clean, use hut slippers indoors, return dishes after meals, and listen to refuge guardians when weather changes.
Self-Sufficiency
Emergency shelters make food, water, cookware, sleeping kit, and basic comfort your responsibility. Plan for about 2-3 litres of water per day, steady food intake, and tested equipment that will still work when the weather is poor.
Leave No Trace
Carry rubbish out because there are no bins on the mountain. Leave emergency shelters cleaner than you found them, close windows and doors, store any left supplies properly, and replace dry firewood where possible.
